Maryland granite is a family owned business and has been since 1996. By 1908 operations ceased at the guilford granite and stone company quarry on the western river bank and the penny quarry which was later filled in for an office complex. There are a number of rocks in maryland that have at one time or another been used as building or decorative stone. Originally known as waltersville it was renamed granite in recognition of its principal product the woodstock quartz monzonite was quarried.
