The mat phong setting enables or disables phong shading.
I actually prefer it.
But many people would rather use r rimlight 0 because it doesn t break anything.
But mat phong disables rimlight along with some other stuff that helps contribute to the soft lighting i was referring to.
Mat phong makes lighting look much softer for lack of a better word overall.
Mat phong 0 looks better imo and provides a higher framerate since it doesn t have to render plasticy shines all over everything including cotton clothing which doesn t shine at all irl.

Mat phong is a convar all you need to do is put mat phong 0 in your fps config you can put it directly in the console for comparison though it takes a while to remove all phongs from the map.
